Nov 18, 2024

On November 13, 2024, Professor Mei Yi, Fellow of Engineering New Zealand and Associate Dean of Research at the Faculty of Engineering, Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, was invited to the National Engineering Laboratory for Big Data System Computing Technology at Shenzhen University for academic exchange.

More than 30 faculty members and students from the National Engineering Laboratory for Big Data System Computing Technology and the School of Computer Science and Software Engineering, including Professor Zhu Zexuan and Professor Lin Qiuzhen, participated in the exchange.

At the meeting, Associate Professor Mei first introduced the campus environment of New Zealand and Victoria University of Wellington, and was invited to give an academic report entitled "Learning to Optimise: A Perspective from Darwinian Evolution". She elaborated on the evolution of optimization algorithm design methods, discussed the important significance of learning optimization in optimization algorithm design, and introduced in depth the role of genetic programming in learning optimization, as well as its application in multiple dynamic optimization scenarios such as flexible work shop scheduling, ambulance scheduling, traffic signal control and air traffic flow management. She also compared the different characteristics of genetic programming and reinforcement learning in learning optimization.

The exchange meeting was held in a relaxed and enthusiastic atmosphere, with rich and novel content that sparked active discussion and interaction among faculty and students. Participating faculty and students expressed that they had benefited greatly, and Associate Professor Mei also expressed her expectation to further deepen academic exchanges and research cooperation with the National Engineering Laboratory for Big Data System Computing Technology.
