To inspire freshmen's enthusiasm for scientific research and help them quickly clarify their learning goals and directions, on October 18, 2024, Professor Chen Guoliang, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Director of the National Engineering Laboratory for Big Data System Computing Technology at Shenzhen University, gave a "Life of an Academician" sharing session to the laboratory's 2024 freshmen in classroom L2-109 of Zhili Building.
Academician Chen Guoliang, taking General Secretary Xi Jinping's speech on youth struggle as a starting point, shared examples and anecdotes from his academic and professional career, recounting five major turning points in his life, and offering the self-discipline motto of "listen more, observe more, speak less, and interfere less" for encouragement to the teachers and students present.
Academician Chen summarized his remarkable life in 24 characters: "Both worker and farmer, both scholar and warrior, both strong and weak, both hard and soft, both abstract and concrete, both Eastern and Western." From farmer to worker, from military to academia, he has always retained his farmer's essence, embodied the "craftsman's spirit," maintained the excellent style of a soldier, and kept his responsibility to the country and its people firmly in mind. Academician Chen shared his academic life with the students, discussing his studies in both strong and weak currents, his equal emphasis on hardware and software development, and his travels between the East and West for academic exchanges. Academician Chen Guoliang's life experience, like the short poem he wrote, is about forging ahead relentlessly in his beloved career. At the end of the sharing session, Academician Chen hoped that the students would study diligently, love science, improve their own qualities, and bravely pursue their dreams.
At the age of 87, Academician Chen stood for over two hours to share his insights, once again earning the respect and admiration of the faculty and students present with his extraordinary demeanor. Everyone was deeply moved by Academician Chen's simplicity and patriotism, further strengthening their resolve to dedicate their youthful passion to scientific research and to fulfill their determination to serve the country through concrete actions. After the sharing session, Academician Chen Guoliang had a cordial exchange with the students, answering their questions in detail. Many students lined up to take photos with Academician Chen.
Learning about the life of an academician and inheriting the spirit of scientific and technological innovation, Academician Chen Guoliang's sharing demonstrated his high regard for science and technology education and injected strong momentum into the construction of the National Engineering Laboratory for Big Data.
