On May 31, 2024, the awarding ceremony for the first batch of Guangdong Provincial Basic Discipline Research Centers was held in Guangzhou. The Guangdong Provincial Research Center for Computing Power Enhancement, led by President Mao Junfa, was approved and awarded the title. The research center was initiated by the National Engineering Laboratory for Big Data System Computing Technology at Shenzhen University, with participation from key research teams from the National Key Laboratory of Radio Frequency Heterogeneous Integration, the School of Computer Science and Software Engineering, the School of Electronic and Information Engineering, and the School of Physics and Optoelectronic Engineering.

The Guangdong Provincial Basic Discipline Research Center is a crucial platform for basic research, serving as the source node in building an innovation ecosystem encompassing basic research, technological breakthroughs,成果转化 (technology transfer), science and technology finance, and talent support. It is a birthplace of new academic ideas, aiming to strengthen basic disciplines and solidify the foundation of basic research. Through forward-looking, leading, and original basic theoretical research and cutting-edge scientific exploration, with the long-term goal of raising new questions, understanding new laws, acquiring new knowledge, and establishing new theories, it strives to achieve significant original results in several important basic disciplines, thereby enhancing original innovation capabilities and the overall level of basic discipline development. Five basic science research centers have been established in Guangdong Province as part of the first batch of such centers. Each center receives a funding of 40 million yuan, disbursed over five years.

Addressing the urgent need for improved computing power in my country, the Guangdong Provincial Research Center for Basic Sciences for Computing Power Enhancement will focus on building a collaborative and integrated innovation model encompassing architecture, circuitry, integration, and algorithms. It will concentrate on four research directions: computing power system architecture theory and methods; in-memory computing methods and technologies integrating optoelectronics; heterogeneous chip-particle integration methods and technologies; and intelligent scheduling and computing power optimization. The center aims to break through related fundamental theories, methods, and key technologies, master completely independent intellectual property rights, establish a high-level talent training mechanism for basic computing power research, and create a high-quality development engine for the computing power industry in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Through knowledge innovation, talent cultivation,成果转化 (technology transfer), and institutional innovation, it will create synergy to promote the development of the discipline.

The establishment of the Guangdong Provincial Research Center for Basic Sciences for Computing Power Enhancement represents a significant breakthrough for Shenzhen University in its research platform. It will help the university undertake more important national projects, cultivate national-level talents, improve the level of computer science, and contribute to serving national strategies and developing new productive forces.
