Dec 19, 2023

On the afternoon of December 16, 2023, the Council Meeting and Development Seminar of the National Engineering Laboratory for Big Data was successfully held at Zhizhen Building, Shenzhen University. The meeting invited Academician Qiao Hong, President Jiang Bin, Academician Jin Yaochu, Dean Du Wenli, and Professor Li Zhijun as advisory experts. President Mao Junfa, Chairman of the Board, Vice Presidents Xu Chen, Zhou Hui, Shan Zhiguang, and Wang Juhong, Vice President, and Board members Academician Chen Guoliang, Vice President Ming Zhong, Director Li Jianqiang, Dean Cui Hongzhi, Dean Huang Hui, and Dean Wu Zongze, as well as leaders of the National Engineering Laboratory including Wu Yongwei, Zhu Zexuan, Shen Linlin, Li Ming, Huang Zhexue, Peng Xiaogang, and Luo Chengwen attended the meeting.

President Mao Junfa, Chairman of the Board, welcomed the guests and presented appointment letters to the Director, Executive Director, Deputy Directors, and Assistant Directors of the National Engineering Laboratory for Big Data.

Professor Li Jianqiang, Executive Director, introduced the current development of the National Engineering Laboratory. The National Engineering Laboratory, approved by the National Development and Reform Commission at the end of 2016, is a national-level science and technology innovation platform in the field of big data, led by Shenzhen University and jointly built with the State Information Center, Tsinghua University, Huawei, Tencent, ZTE, and other institutions. Its core mission is to develop and build high-performance big data computing platforms. After nearly seven years of development, the National Engineering Laboratory has achieved remarkable results in the field of big data, becoming a first-class big data research platform in China. In the coming year, evaluation and development will be the top priorities for the National Engineering Laboratory.

Associate Professor Huang Zhexue introduced the National Engineering Laboratory's representative achievements in big data software platforms, including the RSP storage model and the Octopus platform software. RSP transforms massive amounts of structured data into a series of independent, identically distributed data blocks, enabling computation on server clusters and solving the inherent trade-off between data analysis efficiency and accuracy. This achievement has been applied at Shenzhen Customs, enabling timely detection of tax evasion and other irregularities through data analysis, achieving positive results.

During the expert discussion, participants offered suggestions for the future development of the National Engineering Laboratory. Several experts suggested that it should closely follow major national needs, identify a distinctive application area to develop and strengthen, making it a highlight of the laboratory; and simultaneously contribute to local economic development and talent cultivation. University leaders expressed their full support for the upcoming evaluation.

Finally, President Mao Junfa summarized the meeting. He stated that the meeting was timely and important, emphasizing that the National Engineering Laboratory should clearly define its positioning, highlight key research directions, and develop and strengthen its capabilities in specific application areas. He stressed the need for a balance between evaluation and development, while also accelerating the construction of the intelligent computing center.
